Pre and Post Menstrual Syndrome : Symptoms and Treatments

The menstrual cycle dictates the moods and mental well-being of a woman. Regular menstrual cycle is also an indicator of a healthy reproductive system. Roughly half of the world’s population goes through this natural process. It repeats once a month for a significant period of their lifetime.

Despite it being natural and common, there is still a stigma around this subject. Often careless remarks like ‘Are you PMSing?’ are passed to put down women. The lack of sensitivity and knowledge about the subject of PMS is dismal.

So What Exactly is PMS Anyway?

PMS generally refers to ‘Pre-Menstrual Syndrome’. But in recent years it has also come to refer to ‘Post-Menstrual Syndrome’. The latter is was not well-known until recent years. Post-Menstrual Syndrome occurs after after your menstrual cycle has ended.

PMS does not afflict all women. Some women barely notice its symptoms at all. Some women might only suffer from pre or post menstrual syndrome; some might suffer from both. The severity of its effects also varies, from mild to severe depending upon the person.

It is estimated that PMS affects three in four women worldwide in some form or the other. Some studies even say that it affects about 90% of menstruating women!

In addition to this, PMS can also start affecting you as you age. Especially in the years before menopause, many women face this condition.

Let us explore each of these conditions more in-depth.

Pre-Menstrual Syndrome

Pre-menstrual syndrome causes changes in your emotion, physical or behavioral state of well-being. Once you notice the symptoms of Pre-Menstrual Syndrome, you can start to see a pattern. You can even predict the time of the month when you might experience them.

Generally, PMS starts showing signs around five to ten days before your period begins. Once your period arrives, symptoms of PMS tend to go away.

Theories say that PMS occurs because of the changes in your body chemistry due to hormones. Serotonin as well as progesterone and estrogen cause chemical changes in your brain. These chemical changes cause fluctuations in your cyclic hormonal activities. They can cause changes which affect your mood as well as your physical appearance. Yet, the true cause of Pre-Menstrual Syndrome remains unknown.

Teatox Life suggests you to try our excellent herbal tea for women’s health to help you with your hormonal issues. We combine nature and science to bring the best remedies to you! Learn more about this on our website.

Post-Menstrual Syndrome

Experts estimate that 10% of women in their reproductive age experience Post-Menstrual Syndrome. It is relatively uncommon and a hot topic for research. Post-menstrual syndrome can be two cases:

1) continuation of symptoms of pre-menstrual syndrome even after the period has ended

2) or onset of symptoms once the period has ended.

Post menstrual syndrome is usually associated with anovulatory cycles. This means the possibility of having cases of PCOD increases here.

Many of the symptoms of Post-Menstrual Syndrome are like that of Pre-Menstrual Syndrome.

However, post menstrual syndrome is likely associated with a spike in levels of estrogen and androgens. This is unlike premenstrual syndrome, which is linked to reduction in progesterone levels.

Many symptoms of pre and post menstrual syndrome coincide. The ones listed below are by no means a comprehensive list. Please refer to the list above for a fuller perspective.
